Work Related Upper Limb Disorders and Repetitive Strain Injury
The term "Work Related Upper Limb Disorders" is used to describe a number of different medical conditions involving chronic incapacitating hand and arm pain and disablility. They are sometimes also labelled Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD).
WRULDs are commonly linked to occupational causes although they can occur naturally. Historically conditions labelled RSI were linked with jobs such as keyboard operators but WRULDs can be caused not only by repetitive actions but also by sustained posture or from the non-repetitive handling of heavy loads. They can be caused by a single strain or trauma, not necessarily a repetitive or cumulative one.
Common symptoms of WRULDs include pain, weakness in the hands and loss of grip, tingling, a feeling of cold or numbness in the hands, swelling of hands or limbs, pains or cramps in the upper back, shoulders or neck.
Symptoms may be mild at the outset but can become more serious if not addressed at an early stage and may eventually become debilitating and cause inability to carry out common everyday tasks.
Medically WRULDs relate to an array of conditions including:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Tenosynovitis (de Quervain's syndrome)
- Epicondylitis (often referred to as tennis elbow or golfers elbow)
- Tendinitis
- Bursitis
- Trigger finger
- Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS)
- Vibration white finger (VWF)
Employers have a legal duty to provide a safe workplace and prevent injury to their employees. Failure to do this may be negligent and in these cases you may be able to claim compensation for any injury you have suffered.
Employers have a duty to assess the risks involved in you carrying out your job and to address any area which could possibly lead to or cause the worsening of WRULDs. If necessary work practices and working environments should be adapted to suit the worker and avoid any possible injury.
